Advocate wins three awards from Religion Communicators Council

The Advocate has won three awards from the international, interfaith Religion Communicators Council in their annual DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards.

Advocate Editor Jessica Brodie won the award of excellence in the Newspaper or Magazine News Single Story category for “AC to Consider Resolution on Services for Mentally Ill Inmates” and the award of excellence in the Newspaper Feature Single Story category for “Showing Up and Being Real.”

The Advocate won the certificate of merit in the Newspaper, Local or Regional periodicals category.

The awards were given April 10 at the RCC convention in Alexandria, Virginia.

The latest wins bring the total to 67 awards the Advocate has achieved since 2010.

“The Advocate Board of Trustees joins our editor, Jessica Brodie, and assistant editor, Allison Trussell, in giving thanks to the Religion Communicators Council for awarding the Advocate with three distinguished awards,” said the Rev. Angela Ford Nelson, chair of the Advocate Board of Trustees. “These awards, as well as the many other honors that the Advocate has received, are a testament to our commitment to the most excellent way of Jesus Christ. The Advocate board continues to celebrate Jessica and Allison’s exemplary work, and we are exceedingly glad that they are continuously being affirmed by our readers and by leaders in journalism.”

The DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards are given to members of RCC who demonstrate excellence in religious communication and public relations. The RCC, founded in 1929, is an association of religion communicators who work in print and electronic communication, media, marketing and public relations. Faculty members from the Journalism and Mass Communications Department at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, were responsible for judging the projects of religion communication professionals across the country.
