Churches and individuals interested in healthy living and healthy churches are being sought for a new partnership, FAN (Faith, Activity and Nutrition), between the South Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church and the Prevention Research Center at the University of South Carolina.

FAN is a free faith-based program that works to create a healthier church environment. The program has two current needs: 1) two individuals from every district to serve as community health advisors (stipend provided); and 2) churches to enroll in FAN (deadline is Feb. 28).

FAN is not an exercise program or a cooking class, but rather helps churches create a healthy church environment for physical activity and healthy eating by training church committees to do the following:

  • Increase opportunities for physical activity and healthy eating in the church setting;
  • Create healthy church guidelines;
  • Keep the pastor engaged and excited about FAN goals and support the pastor’s health; and
  • Get health messages to church members through church channels.

Churches will be trained in April in each of the districts by community health advisors.

To learn more about FAN and to sign up, visit http://prevention.sph.sc.edu/projects/fanumc.htm or contact Jessica Stucker at jstucker@mailbox.sc.edu or 803-576-5992.
