Lake Junaluska Youth Events to feature Rouse sisters, more
Dynamic duo and community outreach activists Ciona Rouse and Lanecia Rouse Tinsley will speak at Lake Junaluska Summer Youth Events, June 21-25. These sisters grew up in South Carolina and have worked with organizations in the United States and abroad.
Ciona Rouse is a free-lance writer and event speaker living in Nashville, Tennessee. Ciona grew up in South Carolina where she was actively involved in the SC Conference Council on Youth Ministry. She has a long history with Lake Junaluska serving in leadership with the Young People in Missions summer event, working on the Lake Junaluska Summer Staff, and now speaking at the summer youth events. In the early 2000’s, CIona served as Executive Director of the Shared Mission Focus on Young People, part of the General Board of Discipleship. She has also spent time in Africa working with HIV/Aids patients and wrote a book about her experiences titled, Like Breath and Water: Praying with Africa. Ciona and her sister, Lanecia will share from their unique experiences throughout the week.
Lanecia Rouse Tinsley grew up in South Carolina where her days with a pastor father and artist mother shaped her understanding of how the power of embodied Love and art can heal, create social change, and transform lives. After graduating from Wofford College with a B.A. in Sociology and Duke Divinity School with a M.Div., Lanecia served local churches in South Carolina, England, and Tennessee before joining the Bread of LIfe team in 2011. She now spends her days loving, encouraging, and creating with her neighbors living on the streets of Houston, TX through The Art Project, Houston. She recently married Cleve Tinsley. Lanecia and her sister, Ciona will share from their unique experiences during the week.
Nestled in the mountains of North Carolina, Lake Junaluska Youth Events are the perfect summer retreat for 6th through 12th graders. Each week will feature a morning and evening session that will reflect this year’s theme, “Prepare the Way,” (Isaiah 40:3.)
Events are led by a team of college students, guest speakers, and worship bands, with afternoons free for groups to plan rafting trips, enjoy the swimming pool or boats at Lake Junaluska, or participate in a service program. This years’ service project is Stop Hunger Now, where youth groups can choose to help package 25,000 meals for hungry people around the world.
“Lake Junaluska has offered spiritual formation retreats for more than 100 years,”
said Jennifer Martin, Director of Program Ministries at Lake Junaluska. “The mountains of North Carolina are the perfect place for young people to grow closer to God.”
Registration is now open. Packages include dinner on the first night through breakfast on the last day, housing, and program. Three night event packages are $245 per person and four night event packages are $317/person. For those making their own housing and food arrangements, the cost is $105/person for weekends and $120/person for weeks.
