Ready to respond: UMCSC staged to help after Florence floods

By Jessica Brodie. The worst is yet to come. Days after Hurricane Florence battered the coastal Carolinas, devastating communities and claiming 32 lives as of the Advocate’s press time, that’s the consensus among disaster response leaders as they prepare for when, not if. While the downgraded storm didn’t do as much tree and wind damage in this state as many had feared, the deluge of water caused flash- and much localized flooding throughout the Pee Dee area. As of press time Sept. 18, disaster response leaders were prayerfully on pause—watching, waiting, staged and ready to respond. Six have died in South Carolina because of the storm: two from carbon monoxide poisoning and several drivers from flood waters or trees.

South Carolina team helps Puerto Rico rise

By Jessica Brodie. Driving through San Juan and into the mountains of northern Puerto Rico, it’s hard to tell what is hurricane damage versus storm-exposed poverty. Two-story concrete houses and mural-painted businesses stand strong alongside half-tattered rubble and buildings with blue-tarp roofs. Still others are just a crumpled shell of iron bars and decay. Litter-strewn patches of grass share space with grazing cows, horses and goats; a giant crushed-metal structure fills the next field over. And everywhere, amid the wreckage and the rebuild, Puerto Rican flags wave proudly.
