Breaking bread in ministry: Washington Street’s ‘Sunday Dinner’

COLUMBIA—On Sunday, Oct. 28, Washington Street United Methodist Church opened its doors for a welcoming opportunity of ministry with their neighbors.

Similar to the “Downtown Welcome Table” ministry of Haywood Street Church in Asheville, North Carolina, Washington Street hosted their very first “Sunday Dinner” experience where the primary focus of service to those in need integrated with the hope of forming lasting relationships and creating disciples of Christ.

More than 100 homeless and working poor individuals came to Sunday Dinner and experienced a family-style meal, served to them by designated table companions. While the meal provided the nourishment, the conversations amongst the tables created an atmosphere where God’s love was at the forefront of the evening.

The planning and preparation of Sunday Dinner began in the spring of this year, and the vision came to fruition through the generosity of time and talents of many. Along with congregants and ministry teams of Washington Street, a volunteer team of more than 70 individuals included college students, community members and partners and members of neighboring churches.

Many said the devotion and compassion exhibited by everyone involved with Sunday Dinner has encouraged Washington Street to continue to pursue this opportunity of ministering with its neighbors beyond the traditional views of service to others.

A Sunday Dinner guest explained it best himself as he was leaving by saying, “I’m full, but I also feel better.”
